According to one more version, PUNGAVA means a Highly placed (Top cadre). The great poet from Karnataka by name ‘RANNADU’ who translated Mahabharatha into Kannada, the first days Punganur was also called as Temple town, where a minimum of 101 temples were under the patronage of Zamindars, which have been blessed with daily poojas. Huge landed property was dnowed to the temples for their maintenance, Even today, the endowed landed property is with the temples, One of the great living monuments in the town Sri Kalyana Venkataramana Swamy Puskarini (Koneru) build during 16th Century. Goddess Ganga

A Festival Ganga Jathara is celebrated every year to worship to village Goddess in the mouth of March/April at Punganur the Temple for this local goddess is just beside the Raja Mahal. Now the Raja Mahal is the shooting point for several cinemas, people believe that this Goddess of the village Gangamma is the saver of the people. Lakhs of people from all over the taluk Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will attend the Jathara for two days, it is a tradition to celebrate all the local festivals in the town only on Tuesdays.

Role of Zamindars

This was under the rule of local Zamindars (erstwhile taluk comprised six mandals) for more than 500 years starting the middle of 14th century A.D. The Zamindars were Lingayath (Jangama) by caste and from Karnataka. They were subordinates to Maharaja of Mysore and late onto Sri Krishna Devaraya during 16th century.
